Albert Walker Toomer, Sr. was born February 21, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Henry and Bertha Walker Toomer. He was educated in the Berlin Township Elementary School System. He also attended Haddonfield High School in Haddonfield, N.J. As a young man he participated in community activities such as visiting the sick and giving assistance to families in need. On December 23, 1941 Albert married Leola Dorothell Quinn to whom he remained married for 59 years. He built a home in Berlin, N.J. This is where they raised their seven children: Patricia, Susan, Stanley, Wesley, Albert Jr., Leola II and Clarence. He was a hard worker and supported his family by working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
Later, he was employed by the Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Line and Conrail. After thirty-two years of faithful service, he retired in 1979. Albert’s athletic interest centered around baseball. He and his brothers played on the local teams. His favorite positions were first base and short-stop.
He was also a very capable carpenter who knew what to do with a piece of wood. He frequently could be seen working on projects for family members or neighbors in his backyard. Curios, cabinets, tables, shelves,
you name it; he could make it. He had a dry sense of humor and would often make the most unbelievable
remarks without cracking a smile. But when he laughed, he’d hold onto his toothpick and chuckle for a bit. He always found time to enjoy people and the quirks of life. Many of his family and friends have fond memories of receiving his cartoon figures he drew on notes and cards.
In 1999 he joined the Pilgrim Rest Disciples of Christ Church and became a faithful member until his death.
Along with his wife and children, Albert had twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
