Robert, son of the late Henry and Bertha Toomer was born on July 10, 1914 in Jacksonville, Florida. He departed this life Monday, January 23, 1989. During his early childhood the family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later settled in Berlin, N.J. Upon moving back to Philadelphia, Robert completed his formal education in this city, having graduated from Standard Evening High School.
True to the call of his country, he served in the United States Army during World War I from which he was honorably discharged. He also served in the Conservation Corps, where he developed his drawing talent. On December 24, 1945, he married the former Marion L. Wilson. To this union one daughter, Barbara was born.
For many years, he was employed in various agencies of the United States Government Civil Service Division, having worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the Veterans Administration, and the Social Security Office from which he retired in 1973. Robert, known to us affectionately as "Bob" or "Bobby" was a good neighbor and friend who possessed many talents. He was skilled in carpentry and fashioned bookcases for relatives and friends. Upon retirement, he began a business providing carpentry services. Robert served as treasurer of the 5900 Carpenter Street Block Club, whose interest was to enhance the community in which he lived.
He is survived by a devoted wife, Marion L. Toomer, a loving daughter, Mrs Barbara Davis; two lovely granddaughters; Mara and Beandrea Davis and a son-in-law; Mr. Mondell Davis.
Mara Michele was born on February 27, 1978 in Dayton, Ohio. Mara is currently attending North Carolina A & T State University located in Greensboro, North Carolina. She received a full grant in aid, where she played Volleyball four years for the "Aggies". She is majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics and hopes to become a registered dietician. Beandrea was born in July 1981, also in Dayton. She attends the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Barbara teaches 6th grade reading at Rogers Park Middle School in Danbury, Connecticut. The Davis family lived in Ohio for twenty years before settling in Connecticut. Mondell works as a sales executive for Voice Stream Communication Systems in Bloomfield, Connecticut. He is a steward and usher at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Bloomfield. Both girls were baptized recently in the International Church of Christ.
